Little lights up my world more than well-designed architecture. This isn’t limited to built environments, either– the practice of modern architecture can apply to a world of subjects beyond the built form. The Black Diamond Knife Block is a case in point, a product with a sculptural structure reminiscent of modern architecture.
The Black Diamond Knife Block and its accompanying precision blades are a product of Edge of Belgravia. This company produces fine cutlery and kitchenware for modern cooks, but their focus isn’t only on the performance of these products. Knife blocks are a permanent staple of the kitchen counter, one of the few items that is always in view to both the chef and a kitchen’s guests. This makes the aesthetic design of a knife block pretty important. An ugly or pedestrian knife block becomes an eye sore, and an attractive knife block becomes a work of sculptural art that rests on the counter at all times.
The Black Diamond Knife Block as a work of sculptural art is what makes it so special. Its open, faceted and angular shape recalls the design of steel bridges and other heavy-duty structures. It fits into my own fascination with faceted design, which we documented in our feature “Faceted Design: 10 Crystalline Creations of Future Design”.
The Black Diamond Knife Block is available now for $120, and a set of precision knifes for the block sell for an additional $120 after conversion to USD. You’re welcome to use your own knives with this block, but the Edge of Belgravia precision options are a perfect match for such a stunning block like this. [via uncrate]
