A new contemporary home overlooks the picturesque seaside landscape of Vancouver, British Columbia. This 7,000 square foot masterwork is a collaborative effort between residential designer Craig Chevalier and Raven Inside Interior Design. The Burkehill Residence features a large, multi-level structure with living spaces that open into outdoor patios with nearly seamless transitions. The stunning natural landscape of greater Vancouver is the visual focus of nearly every interior space with a window for a clear connection.
The Burkehill Residence is decidedly contemporary from every angle. Its hard lines meet at hard right angles, but these shapes are softened by natural accent tones from slab stone walls and stained wood ceilings. The contrast between these forces, the angular structure vs. the natural materials, yields a comfortable space that doesn’t feel stuffy or pretentious. This is well met with the interior design by Raven Inside, which gives the home an approachable emotion, one that is aware of its own artfulness without preaching to guests.
The exterior spaces make the most of the picturesque Vancouver view. Comfortable outdoor furniture and warm fireplaces overlook a swimming pool and sauna that are perched above the trees, water and mountains beyond. This home is so intimately connected with this natural environment that it couldn’t exist without it. In total, the home is contemporary in structure but natural in spirit, a lodge of sorts that provides a welcome escape from the bustle of modern Vancouver. [photography by brandon barre]
