A contemporary prefab home has been constructed using shipping containers, concrete and a steel framework near Santiago, Chile. The Caterpillar House by Sebastián Irarrázaval was designed and constructed for an artist and family on a hilly outlook in suburban Santiago. The home stretches out from its sloping plot with three large cantilevered shipping containers with private rooms within. The metal walls of these sections are largely unadorned, let to oxidize and age for a natural, rusty red coloring. The bottom level opens into a patio with a hot tub that is just steps away from the living sections indoors. The prefab shipping container structure of this home is built to last, yielding a contemporary home that should certainly stand the test of time. From a visual sense and an environmental perspective, the Caterpillar House is a success in design. [architect: sergio pirrone photography: sebastian irarrazaval via: archdaily]
