A slim, four-story single-family home rises between the residential towers of modern Tokyo. The Highrise House and Garden by Ryue Nishizawa consists of four stories of concrete slab bases with beam supports and floor-to-ceiling glass walls. The curtains that provide privacy to the home’s occupants are a collection of lush plants, trees and potted shrubs that give a natural balance to the urban environment. Each floor provides a different kind of space, from bedrooms to living rooms to private work spaces and places of relaxation. The climb to the top level spins around a winding staircase that opens into a rooftop view of the alleyway environs of central Tokyo. This work by Nishizawa is an excellent use of vertical space where horizontal space comes at a premium, and a smart inclusion of garden spaces as a central element of the design.
