A contemporary rammed-earth home rises out of the Sonoran Desert in Tucson, Arizona, a marvelous example of landscape-conscious design. The Tucson Mountain Retreat by DUST Architecture is a reflection of the sculptural earth tones that surround it, a visual homage to the nature of the desert. Inside, the home employs sliding glass doors and strategically placed windows to provide passive cooling and a visual emphasis on the natural art beyond. The rooms are peaceful and warm to the eye but cool to the touch, with concrete floors that help maintain a comfortable interior temperature. Outdoors, a simple patio with a fire pit extends from the living room, while a furnished deck and dining area welcomes guests on the roof level. It’s a remarkable home, one perfectly suited for desert living, designed with a careful sensitivity for the local environment. [images by jeff goldberg, via designboom]
